Contraindications of Deep Tissue Massage:

  • high or low blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • easily bruised (ie: those who take blood thinners)
  • large varicose veins (excluding minor ones or "spider veins")
  • asthma
  • COPD
  • Serious heart conditions
  • Recent serious injuries or major surgery
  • Prenatal/Postnatal
  • viral conditions (ie: cold & flu)

Side Effects of Deep Tissue:

(What to Expect and What you should do about it)

  • Light-headed, fatigue, and possible nausea: drink lots of water throughout the day (adding a lemon wedge will help), eat something light about 1-2 hrs before your appointment (no heavy meals) and 1-2 hrs after, drink coconut water to regulate your blood sugar and electrolytes, drink ginger or peppermint tea
  • Slight bruising, soreness, dull aching, joint / muscle inflammation: apply arnica cream/gel or tiger balm to affected areas, use a heating pad on low setting or "magic bag"
  • Sweating (Detoxing with no light-headed feeling): Drink water with lemon wedge added, shower and sauna
  • Sharp pain DURING treatment: take slow deep breaths in your nose and out your mouth and try to relax, communicate and work with your service provider through the pain (use a "number system"), never hold your breath or "tighten up", take breaks when needed
